A Weird Week… Monday…

I started thinking like this yesterday morning. There was definitely a touch of the weird going on. What I didn’t know was just how strange it would get.

I felt really happy for a start. It was not my usual mindset for the beginning of another week. Usually, I hope for the best, but by lunchtime, things have slipped into the typical frustrating pattern. You know the one.

You can try, but you know it isn’t gonna work. No matter how much optimism you pour into it, someone somewhere will say no, or you must be joking. Or go away and don’t return until you know what you’re doing.

When lunchtime approached, I realised that none of that had happened. Had I stumbled into another world where things go my way for a change?

It was starting to look like it.

I raced through all the reading, checking, and posting that goes on every day without fail and came out the other end feeling even better.

What was going on?

That’s when I remembered that I had a doctor’s appointment. It was time to visit Grumpy to be told I was getting old, and what else did I expect. Not forgetting it was a sin to mention too many problems at one visit!

I put on my brave (rapidly ageing) face, strolled in, sat down, and asked how she was today. She was doing something complicated, using both monitors and barely acknowledging my presence. For ten minutes, I twiddled my thumbs and stared at everything in the room, thinking weirder was getting worse. In case you’re wondering, my name was not on either screen, so whatever she was doing, she was doing it on my time.

When she finally turned to me, she apologised and asked me how I was.

‘You asked to see me…’ I said.

‘Oh, did I?’ and started scrutinising the monitor again.

After I reminded her of my medical history, she remembered why I was there. A brief reminder that I must never stop taking the corticosteroid, as it was dangerous. I waited three weeks for this appointment and felt weird again. Surely, she could have emailed me with that information?

Weird gave way to mischief, and I mentioned my newest ailment.

‘I have another problem; can I tell you about it? You can say no…’

I could tell by her face that she remembered the last time and knew I had wanted to hit her after rudely telling me that my time was up.

To be fair, she smiled. ‘Go on then…’

To cut a long story short, I will have more tests to find out why I am having trouble swallowing…

That should be fun or not, depending on the day…

Weirdness…

Life is getting a bit weird these days.

While I don’t consider myself smarter than the average bear, I do have a reasonably good memory. I love answering most of the questions on quiz shows, and at 79, I often impress my family.

But…

This morning, something very strange happened.

I was upstairs making the beds, something I do every morning. After making the first bed, I turned around to make the other one, only to find it had already been made. I stood there for a while, staring at it, sure I had not done it.

The trouble is, no one else owned up to doing it.

I am obviously at the right age for a few memory problems. I won’t use the name as I don’t want to bring it to me. I am kinda hoping it will give me a miss!

Any stranger happenings, though, and I shall start to worry, as most of the rows between me and my sister are based on one of us not remembering something correctly. I hope this doesn’t get any worse, as neither of us like giving in, or admitting we were wrong, so God help us!

As a carer, I know how difficult this job can be at times. If I could choose the next stage of my life, it would be that neither of us loses our marbles. Or that both do. Just one of us would be so unfair…

Sixes and Sevens…

I think all this heat has done something to my brain.

My desk is littered with half-finished blogs, post ideas and a load of stuff that I wanted to finish yesterday.

Added to all this confusion are two WIP and a pile of reading matter.

I seem to have been very busy this morning but couldn’t tell you what I have actually done.

It will be another scorchingly hot day, but it’s reasonably cool in my office, so I can’t in all fairness use the heat as an excuse. So, why does everything seem weird today?

Just to illustrate how weird, we were in the office discussing book stuff. All the doors and windows were open on the cool side of the house and there was a gentle breeze, which was very welcome.

Right in the middle of our conversation, there was a loud chirp which seemed to come from right behind me. Anita was nearer the door and saw the culprit.

‘Oh my God, it’s that friendly thrush. He’s in the house, what are we going to do!’

Now, Anita is superstitious and thought a bird in the house was a lot more than odd. But this thrush has been a regular visitor to our garden since early Spring. Loves to follow me around when I’m gardening, happy to retrieve worms from right under my feet.

I grabbed my camera, as he really was a sight to behold, but he wasn’t going to hang around this time, and wandered off down the hall and out the back door.

Quite made my weird day even weirder!

This isn’t our visitor, but looks just like him!

A Weird Week…

Impossible, that’s Anita’s poem today, and that word sums up the week we have just had.

We are used to crazy and can tolerate a little madness (in short doses), but we haven’t seen weird around here for quite a while. We are exhausted, both mentally and physically, so will need a quiet weekend to process everything. (in other words, shove everything back into the right boxes!)

Wishing everyone a lovely peaceful weekend too, and we will be back on Monday!

Does anyone fancy a paddle?

Warning Light?

We have a mystery and a creepy one at that. We noticed it a while ago and try as we might, we cannot figure out what it is or what is causing it.

We are quite used to the spooky goings-on around us, as weird things have been happening to us for a very long time. Some of the things have been a bit scary, like the time all of the mirror tiles in the hall were removed during the night and stacked neatly against the wall. Or the times we smell pipe tobacco or perfume that vanishes as quickly as it comes.

Our cat constantly watches things, things we can’t see and follows them around the room with his eyes.  Sometimes, out of the corner of my eye, I see an old woman dressed in old-fashioned clothes in our kitchen and she seems very at home and interested in what I am doing. Our house is very old, built in 1887, so there are probably many echoes of the past in every brick!

Our lights flicker and switch off all the time, and we have had them checked, but it still happens, so when I caught sight of a strange red light among the bushes outside the front room window, I wasn’t unduly alarmed.

Curious, hell yes. It looked similar to those standby lights that all modern appliances seem to have these days.  I was sure it was outside, but it could only be seen from inside the room. Trouble was, we couldn’t find the source of the reflection, and why it was only visible from certain angles.

For ages, we thought it must have a simple explanation, but the harder we thought about it, the less sense it made. Forced to rethink, we wondered if it could be supernatural as nothing else made sense. The problem with this idea was why? And why was it there at all?

It looked for all the world as if something was sitting in the bushes outside our window. We hunted high and low, both inside and outside the window, but found nothing that could be causing it.

It had to be something reflecting on the glass, but our investigations revealed nothing. Maybe it could be a reflection from somewhere else, but where?

This has been going on for several months and we are no nearer finding the cause.

And before you say it, we know that reflections can be misleading, but it is driving us nuts!

Could it really be a demon visitor, one with only one red eye, spying on us through the window?

What do you think it could be?
