Sometimes I lie awake in the middle of the night and wonder what I am doing.

I know what I think I am doing, but what am I actually accomplishing?

Sometimes, I think writers are ill-equipped to step outside of their writing world to become successful businesswomen.

I imagine you would need a severe dose of reality, and that’s not what we are best at.

I write a lot, or I did, books, poems, or posts about my writing life. But when it comes to marketing our books, that particular head is hard to find. Sometimes I wish I really were Worzel Gummidge with his cupboard full of different heads for different jobs.

If I ever manage to get my head back, I know I must try harder to learn how to succeed in the writing world.

Some authors manage this very well. Maybe I should do some detective work to see how they do it?

I had a bunch of good intentions this morning.

I had been looking out the window at my bonsai trees, most of which are desperate for a repot as the soil in their pots is old and stale.

I started planning the operation, where I would sit, what I would need, and so on. The weather was good, so it would be the perfect time to see how many I could repot.

I also had thoughts about looking at my book in progress, as I had recently re-read a few chapters and found a problem. This had bothered me for a while now, and was probably time I checked it out.

As I pondered (that’s another word for procrastinating) it struck me that repotting a bonsai tree was much like editing a book.

You open the book /  pull the tree out of the pot.

You look for errors /  uncover the roots.

You decide on a plan / you decide which roots to trim.

It would seem that you can prune a book and a bonsai tree, but overall, you are caring for both of them. Although I must admit that it is a lot easier to care for a bonsai than to write a book.

So, which way did I go on this glorious day?

You guessed it, the book problem won…

  3. Solving any kind of problem is a good use of the day. Even if it is only one.

    1. I think so too, John… much better than the alternative…

  4. Your analogy of repotting plants and editing a story is spot on. They both require the same kind of focus. Love it!

I love how you wove the two themes together – writing and gardening. It is a splendid write.
