I read an article the other day about how writers limit themselves to writing a best seller. I thought this was an odd thing to say, for that’s what we all want, isn’t it?
As the writer explained, we don’t learn any other skills that way.
“Successful authors practice.”
Most of us read other books in our genres, and apparently, we should spend more time copying these stories, just to learn all the different aspects. Rewrite chapters, to become familiar with all the different methods.
Personally, I am not sure I would recommend doing any of that, but I do know that every book we read helps us in some way.
Before I became a writer, I was an editor, and a good one. I spent years proofreading and editing Anita’s stories. I got to know all of them very well, and although they certainly encouraged me to write, none of my own stories are anything like hers.
I rarely read any books for fun these days. I end up critiquing them, often tearing them apart to see and learn how they were written.
I think it takes a long time to become a good writer, but it is worth every second sacrificed to become an expert…
