Open book pages with handwritten red ink editing marks and notes

I was pulled up twice yesterday in quick succession.

I had just spent the afternoon re reading the first 8 chapters of my new story, Swan Song and was feeling just a little smug that everything seemed to be on track.

Then I decided to finish reading Beyond Dark: Belladonna, a new detective mystery, by Lavinia Thompson. I don’t really read enough stories in my own genre, an obvious oversight on my part, so when the beginning read well, I settled in for a pleasant read.

I soon realised that this story was better than good, it was brilliant.

It was also highlighting something my story didn’t have, and that was a why. It had a who, a when and a where, but no why. I had hoped this would fall into place as the story progressed, but I knew I had been kidding myself.

I finished reading this story, and made several notes for the review. The problems with my own story hanging over my head like the proverbial Sword of Damoclese!

At any other time, these findings and thoughts would have been earth shattering, but trying to get back into my writing has been a long and hard struggle this year, and there were times when I wanted to give up and have a quiet simple life instead. Maybe I should have waited, instead of pushing myself before I was ready?

I had written 50% of my story, and to make the changes that it needed, would be long and complicated job.  It might be better to start again…

love always

  1. Nah, don’t chuck it, but a brutal machette-wielding might be needed, but not until you’ve mulled it over for a couple of days. :D

    1. It might take more than a few days, Widds. My first thoughts were to start again…

  2. well… I know why it is frustrating…

  3. I am sure you will work it in. I’ve had to go back through books weaving in threads too 💖

    1. That’s reassuring, Robbie, thanks!

  4. I’m not sure it’s a good idea to start a WIP over again after a comparison with something you’ve read. Every story has its own logic.

    1. The book I read just highlighted the points that were missing. I mean, what was I thinking? you need an awful lot of whys to write a book…
