All too often, what we try to do turns into a full-time job, leaving no time for recreation. We all need to do something creative, fun, and relaxing now and again. A bit like giving our brains a holiday.

It’s not a form of laziness, either. Our brains need time out, just like we do.

When was the last time you caught yourself doodling, or drew a picture in the margin of something you should be reading?  A sure sign that your brain needs to do something else.

I love to crochet. It gives me something to do with my hands in the evenings, leaving my mind free to wander where it will. I have had some brilliant ideas while crocheting.

I can think of so many things and solve outstanding problems; it’s like multitasking. In fact, my brain seems to work better away from the computer. But I need to make sure there’s a notepad handy!

Unfortunately, my latest project was a nonstarter. I chose the pattern, bought the yarn, and looked forward to relaxing while creating. Only the yarn was disappointing. It was so thin it was impossible to use. I did try to use it, but it was hopeless so I had to return it. The new yarn arrived this morning, and I love the colour. Now, all I have to do is choose which pattern to use.

I have to add that these creative projects do not interfere with my writing. I can plot an entire book while my hands are busy!

  1. I can knit, but never learned to crochet. Yes, I agree that these pastimes give our brains a rest, as long as the pattern isn’t too difficult!

  2. I can’t crochet or knit. But i have done cross stitch in the past.

    1. It can be anything that doesn’t involve a lot of thought, Esther. Our brains appreciate the time out…

  3. I admire anyone who can crochet. It seems so calming and creative. Wishing you all the best with your new project; I’m sure it’ll be stunning! 🌟

    1. … and produce some wonderful thought waves for the new book, I hope…
