Visitors to my bonsai forest…

Along with the regular visits of a couple of magpies (they are so big when seen up close!), there is also a very small robin who often turns up.

They all seem fascinated by my small trees, and boy, they look strange, hopping about in the smallest forest in the land.

Even the tiny robin looks huge compared to the trees he visits. He turned up again the other day, one of the coldest days so far, and it crossed my mind that he could be looking for food.

So, I bought some fat balls to hang in the garden. I would have liked to have bought some mealworms too, the robin’s favourite, but they want them alive and wriggling, and I couldn’t find any.

I braved the freezing weather and hung the balls on a tree in the garden yesterday. While I was out there, despite the cold, I gathered up the fallen wisteria leaves and tied up the new pampas grass. This didn’t do much this year, but hopefully, it will do better in 2025. It’s a pink variety, so it should be spectacular if it blooms!

I was only outside for fifteen minutes, but I was so cold when I came back inside. My lungs were screaming, and I could hardly breathe, but I felt much better about Mr Robin…

The intense cold is set to continue, so I shall stay in the warm and work on my new story…

  1. Birds are joy.

    1. Always, Jennie. I could watch them all day…

      1. Me, too!

  2. Lovely little visitors. Good to stay inside when it’s super cold, Jaye. Especially when there’s a story in the works. :-)

    1. I am so happy to report that the new story is well and truly in the works, Diana. I had forgotten how much fun it is…

        1. Double Yay, Diana!

  3. Beautiful photos, Jaye. Love your Bonsai. The black and white bird looks like a giant

    1. You don’t realise how big they are until they come closer. They do look ridiculous playing with my bonsai…

      1. Fun to see.

        1. Definitely… I look forward to seeing them most days… Mister Robin is a regular too…

  4. A lovely post, I’m so glad you look after the birds 💗

    1. Thanks Robbie, it’s a small price for the enjoyment they give…

  5. No I haven’t seen pink pampas either, even on Gardeners’ World!

I always feel sorry for robins, so tiny and singing so loudly. I guess it’s their fault if they choose a solitary lifestyle so they can’t snuggle together with a flock in cold weather!

    1. Yes, I never see more than one at a time. I wonder what happened to Mrs Robin?

      1. I’ve only seen a pair of robins once in my garden.

        1. not completely solitary then…

  6. I haven’t seen a pink pampas grass before, it’s stunning!

    1. I can’t wait to see it flower, to see if they really are a proper pink. Sometimes the photographs lie!

      1. Fingers crossed!

  7. I love robins. They’re my favourite bird. We get lots of magpies in our garden. I love your garden!

    1. I do share the good bits, Esther. It’s not all lovely!

  8. They were probably looking for food. We get blue and great tits on our clematis and honeysuckle, pecking away. We have trouble with aphids on the honeysuckle. Every year it produces buds, which then gets covered in black flies and never open. I hope the tits will eat loads so we don’t have a problem next year. But I’m not holding my breath.

I hope your robin enjoys your fat balls.

    1. I use washing up liquid in water for aphids, Vivienne, they really don’t like it!

      1. Yes, I know that trick, but there’s a lot of this honeysuckle. I must really make an effort next year, even if it means me getting wet from the spray when it’s high up. 😂
