This isn’t me, but pretty close…

Someone once suggested that book blurbs should be written first, before the book.

A novel idea?

Sorry about that; I couldn’t help it…

I haven’t had the opportunity to try this until now, as blurbs are usually an afterthought for me.

Blurbs are very hard to write, at least I think they are, whenever I attempt to write one.

So, while I was busy promoting one of our other books, an idea sprung into my head that I should try to write the blurb for my new WIP, Swan Song.

This turned out to be quite a challenge, as this story, like all new beginnings, is sketchy at best, and I thought I was wasting my time. But I had a go anyway, and somehow, it seemed easier than usual. It even made me think about the story in more detail, and I came up with many ideas I hadn’t considered.

I can see that it would prevent those annoying or dull gaps in the middle of the story, as by already having the blurb written, you have a blueprint to go by…

Maybe there is something to say about putting the cart before the horse?

P.S: ” I would print it here, but it needs a tagline ! “

This is my cheat for Six on Saturday… Sorry Jim!

You’re right, it’s only three, but they are lovely…

  1. This is a great idea!

    1. It does seem to help somehow…

  2. Putting the cart bfore the horse – I reckon that’s how supermarket trolleys were invented. :D

    1. Very true, Widds. It has to be true, as you can’t have wonky wheels on all of them by accident!

  3. Does seem like a unique way to build a blurb, Jaye. You are right it can be a blueprint.

    1. A guideline at the very least, John…

  4. I’ve never tried writing the blurb first, but you have me thinking about it. Way to go, Jaye!

    1. It definitely felt easier, Jan, and of course, it can always be adjusted later…

  5. A great idea. I usually write the blurb after the book is finished, often just before publication. But one time I was struggling with the story about half way through. So I wrote the blurb and guess what? I was able to complete the book!

    1. I think I may have stumbled onto something here, Darlene. Anything to help us get the job done!

  6. What a novel idea. I think I might try that.

    1. Do let us know if this works for you, Vivienne…
