#ThrowbackThursday: The Woman before Me by Ruth Dugdall #Psychological Fiction

‘Ruth Dugdall’s novels are intelligent and gripping, with a sophisticated psychological sensibility. She is a huge talent.’ Sophie Hannah

They came for me, just like I knew they would. Luke had been dead for just three days.

Rose Wilks’ life is shattered when her newborn baby Joel is admitted to intensive care. Emma Hatcher has all that Rose lacks. Beauty. A loving husband. A healthy son. Until tragedy strikes and Rose is the only suspect.

Now, having spent nearly five years in prison in Ipswich, Rose is just weeks away from freedom. Her probation officer Cate must decide whether Rose is remorseful for her crime, or whether she remains a threat to society. As Cate is drawn in, she begins to doubt her own judgement.

Where is the line between love and obsession, can justice be served and, if so… by what means?

A clever, sophisticated, psychological crime thriller with dark twists you won’t see coming… Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn, S.J. Watson, B A Paris and Sophie Hannah

Our Review

I’m not sure what attracted me to this book, and for once it couldn’t have been the cover. An indistinct, mysterious image that didn’t convey anything about the story at all.
But the book had won many awards and was highly recommended. Reviews said it was a ‘chilling psychological thriller with a shocking twist.’

The beginning of the book was more like a naïve memoir, almost childishly written in a matter of fact manner, but with just enough intrigue to get you thinking. I nearly gave up on it several times, but an interesting cast of characters with in-depth stories of their own, plus the childhood history made me carry on reading.

The introduction of the “Black Book Entries” was a revealing part of the story. Something mentally disturbed patients are encouraged to do to help their recovery. This gave the story an unexpected depth too. The pace picks up considerably, making the tension almost palpable.

So, after an agonisingly slow, deliberate start, the story escalates, building unbearably to its conclusion. A conclusion I really didn’t see coming. There were so many twists and turns, but nothing prepared me for the final chapter. It hit me like a truck. A brilliantly executed, grippingly original story.

About the Author

Ruth Dugdall worked as a Probation Officer for almost a decade, working in high security prisons with numerous high-risk criminals. Ruth’s writing is heavily influenced by her professional background, providing authenticity and credibility to the crime genre.

#Throwback Thursday: Will O’ the Wisp by Craig Boyack @coldhandboyack #Supernatural

It is Halloween again, and the perfect time to run my favourite spooky book again!

There is something evil up Bergamot Holler, and it’s been targeting the Hall family for generations. Patty Hall is fifteen years old. She loves stargazing, science fiction, and all things related to space exploration. This leaves her perfectly prepared for the wrong problem.

Patty is afraid her mother will send her to a care facility if she tells her what she’s seen. If she doesn’t figure things out soon, she’s going to join her father in the Hall family cemetery plot.

Patty has to come to grips with her own physical handicap, face the wilderness, and an ancient evil all alone if she’s going to survive.
Will O’ the Wisp is suitable for young adults. It involves elements of suspense and is set in the mid-1970s.

 Our Review

I have long been a fan of Craig Boyack the brilliant writer and blogger.     Been meaning to read his book, Will o the Wisp for ages too, so what better time than Halloween?

Will o the Wisp is a very spooky story about the single-minded determination of a 15-year-old girl, Patty Hall, to rid her family of an ancient curse. Something she knew nothing about until noticing a glowing light in the woods near her home, when it seemed to attack a college student with gruesome results.

Patty is quite a character, funny and smart, despite suffering the constant bullying at school because she wears leg braces. She decides to find out more about the lights and her family’s connection to them.  A school History project gives Patty the opportunity to research the lights. What she learns and the lengths she is prepared to go to, and the risks she takes, will earn your admiration. I thought she was amazing, so brave and determined to save her family.

I loved the chapter where Patty visits an old haunted library in Washington, alone. What happens there made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I wonder if I would have been as brave at that age.

This was a hard book to review, as describing all the good stuff would have revealed spoilers, but I recommend reading Will o the Wisp, you will not be disappointed, but you will be scared to death!

Here are a few words from Craig himself…

I’m on the verge of being an empty nester, and I like to write fiction. This blog is to share ideas with readers and writers. I have a decent body of work on Amazon, and I hope you’ll check some of them out. They are all speculative fiction, but seem to stay closest to science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy.

I have other interests that may sneak in from time to time. I like the great outdoors and all it has to offer. Morels and huckleberries are particularly fun. I once caught and released a 7-foot white sturgeon from the Snake River.

I’ve posted using categories to make everything easier. They work like this.

Writing: This is me talking about writing, asking questions, or discussing my projects.

Blogging: When I figure something out, it will go here. There might be something about my number of followers, or a new milestone. I tend to follow those people who interact in the comments.

Muse: This one gets pretty crazy. This is where I consult with my Muse, Lorelei. It involves some of the characters from my books.  There are a few characters that are unique to the blog too, like a raven named Doubt. I try to make it about writing, and there are sometimes subtle lessons included. New readers will appreciate the Entertaining Stories Primer.

Short Stories & Vignettes: Sometimes I get fully detailed scenes from my Muse. This is how my stories are born. If I have a good one, I’ll post about it. Some of them might turn into books, some won’t. I have a plan to post some micro-fiction here too. If this stuff interests you, check out the category on the sidebar.

The Idea Mill: I post about things I find online that fuel my imagination. Push feeds make this easy, and when something is particularly interesting I save it for one of these posts. These are the kind of ideas that could fuel an entire novel, or add an element to something you’re in the process of drafting. I may include some of them in my stories, I may not. Let me know if something here fuels your imagination.

image20.jpeg

Lisa Burton Radio: This is the newest category. The main character from my first book is Lisa Burton. She’s a robot and makes regular appearances on this blog, usually under the Muse category. In early 2015 I decided to make her into the spokesmodel for this blog. There are posters, free paper dolls, and she started making guest appearances on other blogs. As her popularity grew, I decided she could interview the characters of other authors to help them promote their stories.

Uncategorized: This is where everything else goes. I might post about fishing, gathering wild morels, sourdough, or anything else that strikes me.

I try to keep my two most recent titles in the sidebar with direct purchase links. There is a slideshow with all my covers, and they are all available through my Amazon author site. That is also linked in the sidebar.

My books are all e-books. Don’t panic if you don’t have a Kindle. Amazon provides a free app for almost every electronic device in existence. I included a link at the top of my sidebar to make it easy for you.

Come on in, it’s fun here.

P.S. I am declaring this to be an award free blog. I appreciate your finding me worthy, but your comments are enough.

#ThrowbackThursday: Blind Cupid by Max Brandt #MysteryThriller @max13brandt

blind cupid

Blind Cupid by Max Brandt

‘Blind love, blind stupid promises. Borne of despair so deep to be unimaginable…’

I have never been much of a fan of crime/mystery fiction, preferring to read Stephen King, Dean Koontz and the like. Then my sister-in-law, Jaye Marie finished writing her first book, Nine Lives and you’ve guessed it, it was a crime/mystery!
She didn’t intend to write in that genre, but her characters had other ideas. She ended up enjoying it, and when I read it, so did I. So much that we have been reading more of the same ever since.

Max Brandt is another first time author, but you would never guess from reading his book. Blind Cupid is an intelligently written crime thriller, a harrowing story about a serial killer of children and not for the fainthearted. Written with care, with believable characters that are not what they seem; and a set of circumstances too horrible to believe.

One of the characters completely fooled me, the authors early depiction was utterly convincing… the story twisted and turned, leaving me clueless until right at the end.
I really liked the clever ploy of using allegory to compare Greek legend and Dickens with different scenarios; it lifted this fascinating story into a higher intellectual realm.
A very visual story, painfully dark, but highlighting the real need for better care and supervision for vulnerable children.

I think a good book should do more than entertain or horrify. I found myself wondering why he chose to write it, and discovered that Max worked for ten years as a social worker. This says more about the system than I ever could.

Towards the end of the book, the detective in charge contemplates the case, calling it “the most bizarre, sickening and, ultimately tragic tale…” and he never said a truer word…

About the Author

Max has been writing for many years (books, plays, songs, rants!) but has only recently had the time to concentrate fully on his writing. He spent twenty plus years fronting a rock band, many more doing all sorts of things (including running pubs and driving large lorries) and spent ten years working as a Residential Social Worker and Support Worker for Looked-After Young People. His experiences in that field were just one of the motivating forces behind this first book.

He is already working on the follow-up to ‘Blind Cupid’ – provisionally entitled ‘The Blood-Dimmed Tide’ (Yeats and Shakespeare are a couple of his passions) – and he tries manfully to write a blog (maxbrandtwriter.blogspot.com) which will remind him that, even after nearly forty years of trying to get published, it’s all worth it in the end! It might also help other writers to avoid some of the pitfalls and keep them hacking away at the coal-face; it really is the most satisfying thing, to see your book out there.
Theatre is another in the long list of Max’s passions and he is Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Hub, who are a Devon-based company that are in the process of bringing a county-wide production of ‘Macbeth’ to the theatre-going public in 2016, to remember Shakespeare and the 400th anniversary of his passing.

I love #ThrowbackThursday, such a wonderful way of sharing the books you have enjoyed!

Callie Daniels had it all – a handsome and loyal husband – a sweet and loving son. When death comes knocking at the door twice and they are both taken from her, Callie is suddenly struggling to find a reason to continue with her own life.
During an accidental overdose, she discovers that maybe her son is not lost to her forever when she sees a vision and her journey to understand what happens after death takes top priority.

In the middle of Callie’s quest to deal with her grief, she uncovers a secret that she just can’t ignore. These secrets lead her on a journey to understanding more about life than she ever expected to know.

Our Review

I knew that Penny Harmon writes romance novels, but Dragonfly Wishes didn’t read like a romance at all in the beginning. The sad opening chapter set the tone for the book, at least that was my initial impression.

Callie’s world is in ruins, her husband and child gone.

What are you supposed to do at times like these?

How do you pick up the pieces of your life and carry on?

Although I haven’t lost anyone through illness or accident, I can only imagine how painful it must be, to be constantly reminded of all the things that have been taken away.

This book could have been all doom and gloom, but surprisingly, it wasn’t.

The arrival of a dragonfly and other mysterious incidents brings a radical change to Callie’s thinking. What  starts out as one small flight of fancy, or was it something more? leads Callie on an endearing journey. The story of loss and bereavement quickly grows into a journey of discovery as Callie tries to get her life back on track.

Far from being a sad story, this book has it all, adventure, detective work, a bucket list and romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this well thought out, uplifting story, although it just missed out on five stars.

Biography

While I have been writing since I can remember, it wasn’t until 2006, after my kids were grown, that I decided to take my writing seriously. I have written for newspapers and magazines, and I have had several short stories published. In January of 2016, I finished my first novella Complicated Inheritance and am now working on a romance to come out in March of 2016 which is the first of a series.

I get asked the question of “Why romance?” a lot. The answer is easy. Most romance novels have a Happy Ever After (HEA) and who doesn’t like a HEA? I can remember being ten and eleven years old and stealing my mother’s romance novels to read. Of course, back then, they weren’t as steamy as today’s romance novels. Whether you read contemporary romance or historical romance, the one thing you will find is they have a great plot and they leave you with a good feeling inside when you’re done.

I started writing romance stories when I was young…unfortunately, I never chose to do anything with them until now. Of course, the majority of my writing was lost in moves, but the ideas are still there.

I live in the U.S…Maine to be exact. You will find the majority of my books have a Maine setting!

I love to hear feedback from readers and you can email me at pennyharmonauthor@gmail.com. Looking forward to hearing from you!!!

#ThrowbackThursday: Pink Matters by Olga Núñez Miret ~@OlgaNM7

91kOOO7UmXL._SL1500_“You are Pink, not the prettiest girl, but smart and with plenty of resources. What do you do when your best male friend offers to have sex with you, because he thinks you’re a lost cause? You plot your revenge with your two best female friends, of course!
It seems you’re in luck when a new and mysterious student appears. And, to top it all, he seems interested in you too. He could take part in the plan. But then, he seems to have a plan of his own… He insists he’s not just an ordinary boy. And what seemed so easy to begin with, gets more and more complicated when Heaven and Hell come knocking at Pink’s door.

Pink Matters is the story of Pink, a 17-year-old girl, a good student, articulate and smart. But she has never been the centre of attention or made the top ten of the most popular and attractive girls at school. When two guys, both claiming to be angels, insist that she is, indeed, ‘special’, fight for her attention and help, and tell her she is the key to the future of the universe, she can’t help but ask: Why me?”

It was the stunning covers of these books (by Lourdes Vidal) that drew my attention, and when I read they were about fallen angels I had to read them all.

The first book, ‘Pink Matters’ did not disappoint, with its interesting, well portrayed characters, all make you need to know what happens next.

Well written, with humour and wit, you find yourself wondering if you have met these characters before. As you get to know them well, you slip right into the story, almost as though you belong there.

This book was faultlessly presented, and sets you up perfectly for the next one, ‘Shapes of Greg’ … when I suspect everything will get a lot more complicated.

Bring them on…

Have you ever walked around your garden, enjoying the birds, insects and lovely flowers and wondered if magic could be hiding there? Sally Cronin obviously has, for this enchanting book explores the magical goings-on in her own garden.

#Throwback Thursday: Myth and Magic from Mae Clair…MaeClair1

#ThrowbackThursday is a wonderful way of reminding everyone about all the books we enjoyed… and Myth and Magic is a wonderful read!

51yAg7FO0UL._UY250_

Veronica Kent fell in love with Caith Breckwood when they were children. As a teenager, she was certain he was the man she was destined to marry. But a traumatic event from Caith’s past led him t

o fear a future together. He left Veronica, hoping to save her from a terrible fate. Twelve years later, Caith, now a P.I., is hired to investigate bizarre incidents at the secluded retreat Veronica manages. Returning to his hometown, Caith is forced to face his nightmares—and his feelings for the woman he’s always loved.

THEN ONE DAY THE MONSTERS BECAME REAL.

Myth and Magic is a passionately romantic yet mysterious story with an interesting and complex plot. I loved the chemistry between the two main characters, Veronica Kent and Caith Breckwood, the electricity between them made my skin tingle and fairly leaped off the pages.

As children, they played games of myth and magic, but fate intervened and a terrible misunderstanding leads to disaster, ruining their relationship and their childhood. How can they leave their troubled past behind and unearth the magic that seems to lurk just beneath the surface?

Brilliantly written and packed with intrigue and atmosphere in the style of old-fashioned romantic mystery novels, the pace and tension will prevent you from putting this book down. I know this for a fact because I couldn’t.

This story hovers between being a ghost story and a full-on hot-blooded romance, but underneath all the mystery and intrigue, this is a typical ‘will they, won’t they’ romance.

Not quite enough magic for me though, although I enjoyed looking for it.

#Throwback Thursday 2 reviews for Shani Struthers @shani_struthers #SpookySupernatural

I was reminded recently that I have more of Shani’s books on my TR list, and high time I got around to them, as I am in need of some chilling!

So here are two of our favourites…

 418mahfE6XL._AC_US160_

Rise To Me  by Shani Struthers

The opening prologue of this stunningly unusual second book in the series, instantly grabs you by the throat. We meet Ruby, a young psychic child, one already well used to communicating with spirits, finding herself confronted with one who is not human or ever was.

Fast-forward 18 years and Ruby now runs a successful domestic spiritual clearance business, called Psychic Surveys, using psychic detection to solve old crimes.

In the course of her job, she encounters an angry ghost and tries to help it move on, but this turns out to be no ordinary haunting. Usually good at her job, she finds herself confronted by something very unexpected. Something she may not be able to do anything about, something from her past comes back to haunt her.

On a lighter note, all psychics have a spirit guide, and Ruby’s is far from ordinary. Hilariously different and fiercely protective, Ruby’s guide is a dog called Jed.

This book has everything. Well written with a nightmare ending, brilliantly suspenseful and gripping.  I enjoyed reading it immensely.

About The Author

Born and bred in Brighton, Shani Struthers is the author of ten supernatural thrillers (so far), some set in various locations in England, others in more far-flung destinations such as Venice and America. Having been brought up with an understanding of the Occult and alternative views on religion, she threads this knowledge throughout her books, often drawing on real-life experiences of her own, from people she has known and from well-known Occult figures too. Her Psychic Surveys series, written from the viewpoint of a group of psychics who specialise in domestic spiritual clearance, has proved very popular indeed, becoming global Amazon genre bestsellers. Her new series – This Haunted World – is a set of standalone books set in and around the world’s most haunted places and again, weave fact with fiction. They too have topped the Amazon genre charts in both the UK and the US. A full-time author, she is also a member of both a local and national author co-operative through which all her books are published.

                                                                        **********

Here is our review for the next book in the Psychic Surveys series, 44 Gilmore Street!

51jeCSPUC8L._SX325_BO1,204,203,200_

“We all have to face our demons at some point.”

Psychic Surveys – specialists in domestic spiritual clearance – have never been busier. Although exhausted, Ruby is pleased. Her track record as well as her down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach inspires faith in the haunted, who willingly call on her high street consultancy when the supernatural takes hold.

But that’s all about to change.

Two cases prove trying: 44 Gilmore Street, home to a particularly violent spirit, and the reincarnation case of Elisha Grey. When Gilmore Street attracts press attention, matters quickly deteriorate. Dubbed the ‘New Enfield’, the ‘Ghost of Gilmore Street’ inflames public imagination, but as Ruby and the team fail repeatedly to evict the entity, faith in them wavers.

Dealing with negative press, the strangeness surrounding Elisha, and a spirit that’s becoming increasingly territorial, Ruby’s at breaking point. So much is pushing her towards the abyss, not least her own past. It seems some demons just won’t let go…

Having previously read Rise To Me, I knew I would enjoy 44 Gilmore Street too. And I was right, new cases, new emotions and a shed load of intrigue.

Again, I marvelled at the depth of the author’s knowledge of psychic phenomena as the characters explore a new field, that of past life regression, or reincarnation if you will. A truly fascinating subject.

We read a lot of books in many different genres, but Shani Struthers writes such unusual stories in an equally unusual field, and she does it brilliantly.

Deliciously different, not the typical stereotyped glory stories which usually  sensationalise the subject. 44 Gilmore Street shows us  what a strange, dangerous job domestic spiritual clearance really is.

The characters are genuine, down to earth, caring people, with believable relationships. I loved them all, foibles and all, and I particularly liked the new sadness element that usually accompanies these dealings.

The tension builds slowly in this book, stretching your nerves to breaking point, and the end of the story is literally hair raising. You might need to leave the light on at bed time!

“Did Ancient Egyptians visit Australia?”

13 year old TC has a secret. No one knows she possesses a supernatural power.
Can TC help her Uncle Max, an archaeologist; unearth enough evidence that Ancient Egyptians visited Australia, before he’s discredited in the media by those that want the past to stay buried?

“Some would say that I have a gift, but to me it’s always been a curse. Before I changed my mind, I tugged off my gloves and whipped my head left and right, checking to see that no one was watching. I sucked in breath and steadied my nerves then thrust my hands against the stones and touched one of the cartouches. Time and place ripped away.”

Gold Medal Winner in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2015 9-12 years.
Silver Medal Winner 2016 Readers’ Favorite Book Awards Children’s/Preteen.
Blue Treat Award Rave Reviews Book Club 2017.

An enthralling archaeological mystery, mixing the supernatural with humour and suspense.

The first of TC’s adventures – an archaeological mystery for junior readers and above.

Family friendly finalist in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards.

Our Review

TC is a rebellious, headstrong but likeable teenage girl with an extraordinary gift.

Somehow, she can tap into the past and literally witness history being made simply by touching things with her hands. A bit of a bind having to wear gloves all the time to avoid it happening all the time, especially for a teenage girl, but it did give a certain authenticity to her amazing talent.

While exploring Australia with her Uncle, she finds hieroglyphics carved on rocks. These send her searching for the lost and forgotten tomb of an Egyptian King. Someone whose life she learned about when she touched the stones. A unique twist of a story, and TC is a totally believable teenage Indiana Jones.

I loved this story and all the lovely illustrations. I was gripped from the very first page and couldn’t fault the writing, the plot or the formatting. A very special story, I could totally believe that the Egyptians explored Australia, and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
