I have suffered with that fluttering feeling
for most of my life
When I was younger,
I believed it heralded good news
Most of the time it did.
Now, it’s happening more often
I put it down to old age
Getting nervous about things
Finally, I went to the doctor
He suggested an x-ray
Now I have a wonderful picture on my wall
Of the fluttery feeling inside my body
beautiful, crystal clear butterflies
telling me everything is all right…

I see you
The small child held by the adult body
Hiding inside the box you constructed
Thinking it safe from the tears that still fall
By young pain remembered
Days you cannot rub from mind
Pain relived from a single word
By a friend, not from uncaring
Yet the point of a sword broke through
The box where you hide
The small child, unable to set the past free…
