Multiple plates with partially eaten food including salmon with asparagus and rice, chicken with mashed potatoes and peas, pasta with tomato sauce, salad, cheesecake, and glasses of wine.

As the head cook and bottle washer in our house, I get some weird requests sometimes. Anything from how I chop the carrots up, to ‘why don’t we have sweetcorn any more?’

This last request really confused me.

‘Can we have smaller meals please?’

None of us are the size we want to be, so I thought I knew why they asked this, but the how escaped me. There have been a surge of complaints lately about the size of my dinners, but compared to what they had to eat before I regained the use of the cooker, I didn’t see the problem. As I always tell them, you can always leave what you can’t eat, I won’t be offended.

I always worry that I haven’t prepared enough food, so I probably do make too much, and I would rather put it on the plate than the bin.

‘Maybe we should have smaller plates,’ I asked. This seemed like the perfect solution, but I was out voted. ‘Definitely not.’

How will I cope with having to leave empty spaces on the plates?

My usual reaction to criticism is to stop whatever caused it, which isn’t really acceptable…

  1. My answer would be, “of course,” and then dish up a smaller portion to the one asking. The rest can be served for lunch later.

  5. As folks get older, they don’t need to eat as much (or so they say). I have cut back on serving sizes but I do tend to cook more than we need. So it’s leftovers some days!

    1. I am not very good at guessing how much food I need to cook…
