When I came downstairs this morning, the temperature outside was -5, and despite wearing several layers of clothing, I did not feel warm. The sun has appeared, so it is a little warmer, but not much.

I needed to fill up the bird feeders, for it really bothers me just how much the little ones are suffering. Not that I wanted to go out there, but it would haunt me if I didn’t.

Normally, I would pop out there, minus a coat, and very often minus shoes too, but today I wore a thick jacket and flipflops. I was so glad I did, for it is a winter wonderland out there. The grass was white and crunchy when I walked on it, and everywhere I looked, thick frost sparkled in the sunshine.

I came back indoors for my phone, hoping to capture a few photos and not freeze to death while I was at it.

The world seems to have gone crazy lately, with earthquakes, raging forest fires, and subzero temperatures. Wherever you are, we hope you stay dry, safe, and warm.

  1. Brrrrr … -5 is a mite brisk. :D … I pop my head out the front door when I get up just to breathe in a few deep breaths, in shorts and a t-shirt. Mrs Widds has given up on me, I think. I don’t stay out there long especially if it’s double digits below freezing, but there’s something mysterious and otherworldly about it :D … especially if one has a warm cave and a hot cuppa to scurry back to. :D

    1. I’m happy to view it all through my window, but I often wish I could go for a walk. My old bones start screaming just at the thought of it…

  2. Yikes! That is cold! We had our first snow but now it’s all melting off and turning into slush.

    1. They say this cold spell won’t last long, and we can’t wait for it to go so we can feel warm again…

  3. No. We’re the Interior. Lots of bears but no polar bears. That’s up on the North Slope. It was -35 F last week though…

    1. How do you cope with those temperatures?

      1. You just do a lot of from the house- to the car- to the job- to the car kind of movement. Believe it or not it really isn’t all that much of an impediment. Unless like your car freezes up or your pipes freeze….

        1. Ssshhh, don’t say that out loud, fate is listening!

  4. It’s a balmy 16 degrees here in Fairbanks and we’re looking forward to near 40 degrees over the weekend. I’m beginning to wonder if Mother Nature hasn’t pulled a Freaky Friday on us! Reference is of course to the movie and not the day of the week. Have an excellent weekend!

    1. Fairbanks – where polar bears go to freeze with +4°C in January?

  5. Keep warm, both of you. It’s cold here, too, but the frost is beginning to go in the sunshine.

    1. Keeping warm is becoming a struggle for us, Vivienne. Hopefully the weather will warm up soon…

      1. It’s supposed to be warmer next week.

        1. Yes, we are really looking forward to that, Vivienne…
