Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

When I came across the Bloganuary writing prompt this morning, it triggered a desire to know more about my real name.

You see, I was named Jennifer at the time of my birth. It was possibly a lovely name, but after years of hearing it scream at me every time I did something wrong (according to my mother), I began to hate it.

So, when I grew up, I looked for ways to change it. For a while, I was Jenny, then Jen, and I was happy to forget about it. When I became a writer/blogger, I wanted something different and chose Jaye. Somehow, I knew this was the real me.

I have discovered some unusual facts about these names thanks to this prompt.

The name Jennifer comes from Guinevere, or a Cornish name, a version of Gwenhwyfar.

There are several meanings. A white fairy, white shadow, fair one or blessed spirit. None of these seem to fit me. I do have an affinity with Cornwall, though.

Jen or Jenny are the shortened versions.

Jaye, my present moniker, is a diminutive of Judith.

A versatile and unique name, they say. That sounds like me!

It is represented by the Blue Jaye, a crow family bird known for its boldness and intelligence. Now, that definitely sounds like me…

  6. Good for you! I much prefer Meeka/Meeks to my birth name. Names /should/ reflect who we are instead of who our parents think we might become. :)

    1. I totally agree, Meeks…

  7. Jaye is a super name. I have always like the spunk of the blue jay so if it is your spirit bird all the better.

Big smiles with this post, Jaye. I never liked my name, Gwendolyn, but the shortened version seemed to fit. 😊

    1. I think it does, Gwen…

The blue jay is beautiful. I like that you picked your own name, it seems silly to stick with a label if you don’t like the feel.
