what this is?

Whatever this is, it is 10″ wide and growing in our sadly neglected and overgrown with weeds patio. I suspect the birds have gifted it to us, for I have never seen anything like it in any garden.

I will be using a weedkiller to clear the weeds before repairing the stone work, but loathe to spray any on whatever this is so will try to relocate it elsewhere.

Unless you know different, of course…

  2. It is mullein. It will grow very tall, usually has spires of pretty primrose flowers… takes two years to reach full height then will die. I have loads of it self seeded… it can get humungous :)

    1. It will have to be moved to a better spot then, the paving is not a good place for it at all!

      1. Definite not… it will lift the slabs!

        1. That’s what I thought!

  3. Yes, mullein. Sometimes they grow VERY tall! I’m most familiar with the yellow variety.

    1. Thanks Becky… good to know what I am dealing with!

  4. I agree with Alethea. Mullein. There are different kinds. It will likely bloom next year. Colour may be yellow, white, or even pink.

        1. That is a lovely name, Audrey. So it’s not a weed then?

          1. Some species are weedy. Some are 6 or more feet tall in bloom. It depends on your situation.

            1. Only time will tell me that!

              1. You’ll have to post a picture when it blooms!

                1. you bet I will!

  5. It looks like Mullen. If it is it has medical qualities. I have healer friends who get very excited when one appears in their yards.

    1. Thanks for the info, Alethea!

      1. You’re welcome :-)

  6. Darn autocorrect 😱 – that should be – Plantago

    1. Thanks for this, Chris. I will let it grow and see what it turns into…

  7. No idea, Jaye – I uploaded your photo to Google, it suggested Plantgo? 🤔
