Mike gives out signals that he wants to make a tactful departure before Dave’s arrival. I suppose I can’t blame him, but feel a twinge of disappointment as he walks out to his car.

“Do come and visit again.” I try not to sound too pleading. “But if you’re too busy I understand. I don’t think Kieran will want to go to the day centre now, so not sure about Sainsbury’s next week yet.”

Mike gives me a wave.

“Forget Sainsbury’s. I mostly have healing groups in the afternoons and evenings, so mornings are usually free. I can pop in any morning and help out. Tomorrow?”

“Fine.” I smile at him and feel a strange tingle of excitement. “That’ll be great.”
