Tess rang the doorbell. You could hear the shuffling of feet behind the front door of Dale’s parent’s house. He and Tess were tired from the ride but also, the rush of adrenaline from the early morning excitement had left their bodies. Losing half a night’s sleep didn’t make it any better; the exhaustion was evident on their faces. They were both glad to see his mother open the door even with a bewildered look on her face. She welcomed them in, but they could see she was confused about what they were doing there.
“Why are you here, and why so early in the morning? What’s going on?” Jennifer spoke up quietly, searching their faces for a clue. “And keep your voices down; Dad is still sleeping. He had to work a double yesterday.”
