The water rolled in. She could see nothing on the horizon, just the deep blue water.
This was it – the last small remaining piece of land was slowly being swallowed.
The ships were ready to launch, floating cities that they hoped would sustain them. For how long, no one could guess.
The hope was that the water level would one day begin to drop. The land was still there, the old world they had once inhabited, now entombed. Perhaps a future generation could reclaim it from the sea.
But it would not happen in her lifetime, she knew that.
She walked into the water, throwing off her dress, feeling the cold, salty liquid embalm her, claiming her as it had so many others. She started to swim.
She had no idea how long she could keep going for.
