Colours of Our Pain

My Poems

Blue is blue
But not all blue is sky

Green is green
But not all green is grass

Red is red
But not all red is blood

But I have seen blood
Flow over the grass in vast fields
Under the petulant sky

It runs for a time,
Ceases to flow and cakes
On the feet of those saints
Who have stained our banners
With the sweat of their labour
And filled our streets with blood

Which stiffens.
The darkness it brings
Is thick and wears a frown
We stumble and hiss
At the pain that’s now a kin
That we never can hold dear.
