Poem: Chasing Things

Crow On The Wire

Each day, I chase things.
It’s not my job, per se,
but I find myself doing it
by instinct
and out of necessity.

If I’m not chasing,
I feel guilty
like I’m injured
and on the sideline
while others are in the game.

Even in my dreams, I chase,
but the things I pursue
are unattainable,
slip out of my grasp,
seem to disappear
just as I reach
never quite far enough.

I’ll be glad when the chase is over.
Perhaps when my beard turns gray
or my desire wanes.
Hopefully, by then,
I’ll have learned to be satisfied.
