Personally I would insist that editors are entirely charming people :-)

that is indeed a serious question. I suspect charming editors merely hire muscular or forbidding secretaries who scrutinise those who enter and deal with them appropriately. Thus those who survive this triarge are proper victims of the editor’s charm
