Thoughts for the Day…

The perfect mind is calm. I need to retrain my mind to ignore the background noise of my thoughts.

But how to quiet my mind?

How do those Buddhist monks do it? They seem to observe their thoughts without judgement and let them pass, using the rhythm of their breathing to control their thoughts.

I must concentrate on the present, not dwell in the past or worry about the future, but try as I might, I can’t seem to find the way there.

I have begun to realise that the me that once was isn’t here anymore, probably because I don’t like the me I am now. The helpless me, the one who must concentrate on where I put my feet, or how often I should rest. The me that cannot remember things that were so easy before.

My mind isn’t in the here and now, it wanders, lost in the past and the future, wondering how I will be…

I practise Jnana Yoga, a form of meditation that involves asking ‘Who am I?’ and ‘Who knows this body? Who knows this mind?’ It’s not always easy, but it helps me realise there is a bigger ‘me’ that perceives the changing thoughts and feelings, a space of awareness which doesn’t change. I’ve also found Eckhart Tolle’s books and videos very helpful – he’s all about living in the now.

My problem is, that some of me does need to change… then maybe the real me can enjoy what’s left!

I remember struggling for y-e-a-r-s to quiet my mind and I figured out that I had an easier time finding a mantra to use that gave me more peace than a quiet mind would ever have… these days, I simply say, Thank You. <3

I found that counting sheep is not such a bad thing, it really concentrates the thoughts to the numbers and shuts out every turmoil that might build up.
