Who will have the Last Laugh? #Poetry #StarryNight

I came across this beautiful poem yesterday, and it suddenly struck me that I haven’t seen a starry night sky for some time. The first thing I blamed was the constant rain and all the clouds that seem to be a permanent feature these days.

Then I realised that even on dry nights we are lucky to see anything above us, what with all the street lighting.

We are becoming more and more resentful of living in the middle of a busy town, and on a main road to boot. I can literally read a book in my bedroom without putting the light on!

To be fair, our town wasn’t so big when we moved here 18 years ago. The street lighting was moderate too, but I don’t remember any starry nights. I took a photograph of the sunset last night, to show what I mean.

I spend a lot of my time bemoaning the lack of sea, but maybe I should be more bothered about the lack of sky?

I will be working on the new book for the rest of the day, so it can rain as much as it likes!

Best wishes

There’s (almost) nothing better than seeing the stars. I think of all the children in cities who never have that experience.

I miss seeing them, and I would move to the countryside if I could…

Mind you, these days I am far too busy to worry about what I’m missing…

Hi Jaye, my city, Johannesburg, is also very polluted and we don’t see much in the way of stars. The bush is completely different 💓

How far do you have to travel to see stars, Robbie?

When I was a child I lived in the countryside, and had stars every night. I really do have to move, Jan…

I bemoan the lack of starry skies, too. I can’t remember the last time I saw the Milky Way and all the billions of stars. We only get to see the brightest ones these days.

And I think it’s sad that my grandchildren probably won’t ever see the heavens in all their glory.

Even when we get away from the town, there’s still light preventing a real vision. Maybe if we could see farther towards infinity, we would realise how small and insignificant we are and that might put the Earth’s problems and conflicts in perspective.

I keep remembering the time when we were on holiday in Cornwall. We were on our way home after a night out, when somebody noticed how many stars there were. We all ended up lying on the grass to enjoy the Milky Way and the millions of stars…

It looks like a wonderful town, where you live. Don’t rant about the busy town. Here we are living in pure rurality, and everything we need we have to order, and to wait getting it delivered. Thank God have internet.;-) Best wishes, Michael
