I came across this beautiful poem yesterday, and it suddenly struck me that I haven’t seen a starry night sky for some time. The first thing I blamed was the constant rain and all the clouds that seem to be a permanent feature these days.
Then I realised that even on dry nights we are lucky to see anything above us, what with all the street lighting.
We are becoming more and more resentful of living in the middle of a busy town, and on a main road to boot. I can literally read a book in my bedroom without putting the light on!
To be fair, our town wasn’t so big when we moved here 18 years ago. The street lighting was moderate too, but I don’t remember any starry nights. I took a photograph of the sunset last night, to show what I mean.

I spend a lot of my time bemoaning the lack of sea, but maybe I should be more bothered about the lack of sky?
I will be working on the new book for the rest of the day, so it can rain as much as it likes!
Best wishes
