Just like language and grammar ‘rules’, the answer is ‘it depends’. I reckon that if you choose to do something grammar-y or language-y in your MS then be consistent about from beginning to end. Unless you do something silly that throws them out of the story, like have seventeen glottal stops in someone’s name, your audience will include it in their ‘suspension of disbelief’.
