The Write Equipment

If there is one important thing I have learned in my writing career, is that you need decent equipment to work with.

Many years ago, in the beginning, when spending money on non-essentials just didn’t happen, I made do with any scraps of paper I could find to write my short stories on.

I was busy transcribing my sisters books at the time, which encouraged me to think big, or at least a bit bigger! I had to take a bank loan for a second-hand typewriter, which shows how poor we were.

This typewriter was a million miles away from today’s word processors, but it really launched my desire to be a proper writer. I remember using cheap paper and notebooks, and praying that the expensive ink ribbon would last a little longer.

Years later, I have made my way through a variety of computers, along with all the related problems, which have been fully documented on our blog over the years. I am a terrible technophobe and probably picked the wrong career, as I am convinced that computers were put on this earth to drive us all insane. (I speak from experience as I am certifiable most days!)

I have always wanted to own a laptop too, so I can work in the evenings from the comfort of the living room couch. Especially now, as elevating my legs has become essential. For some reason, my history with laptops has been worse than with computers.

But today, I am writing this post on my new laptop.

  • Unrivaled Performance for Every Challenge. Celeron N100 Processor: Experience blazing-fast performance that keeps up with your busiest days. From multitasking to running resource-intensive applications, this laptop delivers seamless power without compromise. 16GB DDR4 RAM: Tackle heavy workloads with ease. Switch between apps, browser tabs, and projects effortlessly, all while maintaining smooth, lag-free operation. 512G SSD Storage: Enjoy lightning-fast boot times, instant file access, and ample space for all your files, photos, and videos. Backlit Keyboard & Versatile Touchpad – Precision and Comfort. Redefined Backlit Design: Work comfortably in any environment. The backlit keyboard ensures accurate typing, even in low-light conditions, while adding a touch of sophistication. The unique elliptical touchpad: allowing you to control both volume and screen brightness with simple gestures, making your workflow smoother and more intuitive.

After trying almost all of the laptops for sale on Amazon, I am delighted with this one.

(and it was time for a special treat, I think!)

It turned out to be another disappointment, Debby. The keyboard is backlit, but the letters are not, so not much good in the evenings!

I just wish I had an electric plug near the couch, then I wouldn’t have to worry about the battery running out!

I enjoyed how your reflections took me back to my college days (seems so long ago). My academic writing partner was a sturdy and reliable Underwood manual typewriter.

Yay!! Hope the new laptop works out great! I remember those old typewriters well and how I’d always manage to get ink all over me when I changed out a ribbon. It was a godsend when along came electric typewriters with a ribbon in a container you didn’t have to touch. :)

I didn’t attempt writing with a machine- until they put out the word processors. Whew I went to town after that! The progression to the computer felt very natural from there.

Without computers I would have never written a book, let alone 12 of them!! I could never master a typewriter.
