…and Two steps back…

Every time I seem to be getting somewhere, whether it’s with everyday problems, health matters or PC related stuff, something has to stop me in my tracks. Making me rethink everything.

You guessed it… I fell again. I was standing by my bed, folding my duvet. Something I have done a thousand times, when my legs gave way and I dropped to the floor. I landed on my bum this time, so a much better landing.

After a few minutes of wondering what the hell happened, I stood up and finished folding the duvet.

The other annoying thing that happened yesterday is PC related. Something I knew would be happening, but maybe not this soon. My desktop has been doing weird things lately, things I have managed to cope with because the changeover to Windows 11 will happen, but I would like to choose when, if possible.

I logged on as usual, and the home screen appeared. So far, so good. But when I tried to open something, it appeared, but behind the home screen. All I could see of it was a very narrow strip done the left side. I stared at it for a while, wondering what kind of cruel joke had landed on my desk.

Obviously, I tried several times, but this happened every blessed time, before the penny dropped and I knew it was time to give in and buy a new stack.

Changing anything is never good in this house, but as I cannot crawl around the floor looking for sockets and cables, I hope this time is easy.

What has everyone been doing about this Windows update?

I’ve hardly had my computer on since I got home, so I think I may have dodged an update ‘bullet’ or two. Mind you, I haven’t looked behind the curtain yet.

Did your legs just give way without any consultation at all?

my right leg is much weaker than the left, so I think that was the culprit. and no, I don’t get any warning…

I’m sorry, Jaye, but I am on a Mac and don’t have windows issues. Can’t help.

Ouch. I’m glad this fall was relatively benign. As for Windows 11…not happening. Never. Ever.

Have you got your updates set to manual? I’ll be glad when Win10 never gets another ‘update’. So long as you have decent 3rd party anti-virus software, you don’t ‘need’ Defender. And so long as you are very careful never to click on links in emails, even emails from supposedly legitimate companies, you should be safe enough.

    Microsoft is evil.

actually, Meeks, this was the smoothest switch ever. I didn’t have to use my brains at all!

Switch? As in to Windows 11? But…why do it at all? Sorry but I loathe win11 with a passion. :(

I didn’t want to, Meeks, but Windows 10 will be shut down in October, so it was kind of on the cards. So far, I haven’t noticed any difference. They transferred everything, so it all looks the same, just quicker…

Windows 10 will still work. You don’t have to change to 11. What is happening is that updates and support for Windows 10 will stop.

I’m just carrying on with 10 until my pc gives up.

but will Win 10 still run well without support?

It’ll carry on as normal. Just that if you have a problem, you won’t be able to ask them about it. But I don’t think that there are many things that would cause you problems.

I’m carrying on with 10 until my pc gives up and I have to buy a new one.

I’m actually surprised that it went so smoothly for you as the forums are full of people complaining about how their hardware isn’t ‘up to scratch’ for Win11, even though it’s almost brand new. Maybe Micro$oft has changed things in response to the tsunami of negative responses.
I’m also surprised that win11 is running better as it’s an even bigger resource hog than win10.
Just make sure to turn off access to your microphone and camera as those functions can invade your privacy without you even knowing it. As for Remote Access, it allows Microsoft or a malicious other to run your pc as if they were you. Fine, maybe, if it’s the only way you can get something fixed, but a HUGE security risk otherwise.
Apologies, I don’t mean to scare you, just warn you. Btw Windows 10 has those same functions so the difference is one of degree.

I spoke a little too soon, Meeks. I am running into several problems. I may have to watch a video or two to learn the ropes. Most of the basics are working, but I am running into trouble once I try to do other things… sigh… Thanks for the heads up too!

My other half said that when the notice comes for lack of support, we’ll be assigning the current computers to another task, buying new computers (the current ones won’t fit all the extras req’d of 11), and never using a MS product again.

I just wish they would find a system that really works, and then leave it alone…

When my old laptop misbehaves, my strategy is to restart it. Sometimes even to shut it down entirely, wait for a few minutes, and then restart.

I hope things get better rather than worse!

I think I have moved past simply restarting, Audrey. This PC has not been brilliant since the get go!
