A Hitch in the Scheme of things…

A Swan Song

I heard this phrase a long time ago, and it has stuck with me. A while ago, I thought it could be a good title for the new outing of my Detective David Snow.

So I went ahead and started the outline for SwanSong. I even made a working cover.

The expression Swan Song, usually means someone’s last effort, or or a final act before death, or retirement.

And as this could be Snow’s last opus, and I didn’t know this at the time, but could be mine too, it seemed to fit.

The more I work on this story, the more uneasy I become. Was it right to possibly kill off my favourite character? And then my thoughts turned to me. I was still struggling to regain my strength so I could re join the human race, but should I be contemplating that my end could be near?

An atmosphere of doom has been slowly suffocating me for weeks, and I have come to the conclusion that I need a new title, possibly a new concept, and a new cover for the book.

Could I be right, or am I being stupid?

There is an ancient Greek legend that tells of a certain breed of swan that sings the most beautiful song as it is dying.

I did wonder if there was any truth to this legend, for all of the swans I knew of were mute.

When I researched this, I discovered that there is a swan that can sing. It’s called a Whooper swan.

I have always loved swans, but lately, they have become almost an obsession.

I have no idea why, or is there a connection to my state of affairs?

Just because it may be the end for the character, it doesn’t mean so for you. :) And btw, that first cover is gorgeous! The second one isn’t as dynamic, plus the font is right on top of the swan. Just my opinion. :) x

I think a new title might help your outlook. Very few folks want to write their last piece and that title almost directs that behavior. I vote to change it.

That is my first choice, John. I shall put my thinking cap on, if I can find it!

You ain’t done yet, Jaye! It’s natural to feel a bit depressed when you’ve been in a lot of pain. I think you /should/ do a rethink on the title. Maybe Phoenix would be better!

I was beginning to think that the only thing wrong was the title… Thanks for the encouragement, Meeks…

We always see things through the prism of our own feelings. If your subconscious it telling you to change something…do it. :)

Hello! I just randomly came across this post! What if the book was all about not knowing whose Swan Song it would be? Also, I won’t say if you’re right or wrong about this impending sense of doom, because it is what you feel… but you can toy with the idea that it is nobody’s end! Maybe this is simply the pretext to write a great story and it’ll eventually take the shape that it must.

None of us know the time of our departure. The only ones we can control are the ones we right. I don’t know the answer to your question. No one does, but I will tell you the working cover is gorgeous! Because the swan has made itself so big in your awareness, I had to go look it up in my Animal Spirit Guides book. Here’s what it says: “No matter what is happening in your life right now, do whatever it takes to keep your faith strong. Whatever changes you’re going through, go with the flow…” Of course it says a lot more, but that is the basic message. Hugs, dear lady!

There’s the thing about ‘Writing’. You can never tell when ‘What’ will interface with ‘Who’ at any given time.
I put it down to Creativity picking up on a possible story line that the writer feels will work.
You just never know Where, When How.

From my own experience I think the answer to ‘WHY’ might be….
        ‘Just because….’
