January #BlogBattle: Familiar

Things Remembered…

I look at the world through eyes filled with fog

Arms stretched; I search for something familiar

Am I caught in a web? Is it one of my own makings

Or by an unseen hand?

My time ticks faster than the clock

like slices of the past touching my mind

A familiar scent, teasing hope, cracked, broken

A touch of your hand, as familiar as my skin

Yet you have no name, no face

Only the lingering scent of lavender

Why has my mind been assigned to the nether regions

Where I have no transport back to all that is familiar

Too many black tunnels with no light at the end

Yet something in the shadows feels familiar

I often wonder when so many memories vanish from my mind,

when nothing familiar remains

Is it some deed from a past life come back to haunt me?

Is having so many familiar thoughts, feelings, objects around you

a kind of medicine against the loss of self?

I remember my grandmother telling me stories

about witches having familiars, like black cats.

I hope this isn’t the case with me

That I can grab handfuls of the familiar and carry on…

Anita, your poetry touches on emotions hidden. Yet, there always remains something very familiar. Well done!
