The Eyes Have it…

I hoped to start this new week in a better frame of mind despite still being unable to see properly. I had a serious talk with myself, and now I feel more positive about a lot of things.

Last week was pretty hopeless as I battled to do all my usual jobs. Wearing my reading glasses made the eye worse, so reading and writing were out of the question. I found out that you can do quite a lot of other things with vision problems, but deep down inside, I was secretly terrified I was going blind. I did the one thing they tell you not to do and googled my symptoms, only to find there were a lot more things to worry about, like brain tumours.

Instead of depressing me even more, I walked away from the computer feeling better than I had all week. Learning about the worst that could happen somehow had the reverse effect on me. I made a doctor’s appointment and tried to forget what I had read.

One of the things I read about was diabetes. For the longest time, I have been a borderline diabetic, but recent blood tests show that I may have just crossed the line. This can have a serious effect on your vision. If this is the case, all I have to do is regulate my diet, and it should go away again.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it?

I hope this is what’s wrong and that I can fight my way through it, for I’m not ready to give everything up. I mean, what would I do all day?

So sad to hear that, Jaye. But there’s great news too. Maybe chores and re-decorating can be options.

Ugh…I hope it is ‘only’ possible diabetes. If you do try to change your diet, I read something really interesting about the benefits of freezing bread. Apparently, the freezing process changes bread’s glycemic index so it doesn’t dump a whole heap of sugar into your blood at once. We freeze bread all the time because we still can’t just nip out for a loaf when we run out, and it tastes great so may be worth a try. -hugs-

Let’s hope it is something that can be handled easily. Change of diet would be great.

After I turned 80 I decided to stop any effort to lose weight. It has been a life long battle and now I really don’t care anymore. During my Cancer treatment I put on one stone 5. It’s still there five years later.

              I don’t want to care, John… but then I don’t want diabetes either…

I meant about weight loss. Diabetes is a whole different matter.

I’m so glad you made an eye appointment. There are a lot of minor and fixable things too (drier winter weather, too much computer time). I hope the solution is an easy one and you’re back to usual.

Now it seems to have something to do with diabetes, so not getting very far with a solution, Diana. Hopefully soon…

That last question, what would you do all day really resonates with me, Jaye. I often think if I didn’t continue to write stories what would I do with myself? I hope the vision situation is resolved soon so you can get back to doing what you enjoy!

What indeed would you do all day if your eye condition couldn’t be treated, and your vision got worse? You’d do what I do, write with the help of text-to-speech software. You’d learn Braille and find it more efficient when editing your work. I hope your condition is reversable, but if not, vision loss isn’t the end of the world. You simply learn how to do things differently. Adjustment can be difficult, but you can do it.

You seem to be being positive. That’s good.

I sympathise with your eye problem. I have problems in that area, too, but all in one eye: glaucoma, poor vision, and something they don’t know what it is. They think they can see something with their eyes, but nothing shows on ultra sound or MRI scan. Add to that, double vision especially in the evening.

But my left eye is fantastic.

I hope you can get sorted soon.

Yes, I’m grateful for that. My brain ignores my bad eye, on the whole.

The downside is that my husband doesn’t like me driving as it’s the eye that sees what’s coming past that is bad.
