A Letter from Snow… #detective #Fiction

Detective David Snow

My name is David Snow, and I am fortunate to be known as the detective in Marie’s books. She loves to tell the world about me, so I thought I would return the favour.

I am rather fond of Jaye. It’s hard not to be, as she is a lovely lady. She has a heart of gold and is always doing things for her family and friends. A great fan of Mother Nature, I often find her up to her elbows in potting soil. Her health has been a little worrying, although she is strong enough to cope with anything life throws at her.

I like to think I am her favourite character; although I don’t always make her job easy, I am probably better behaved than some of the people in her books.

She has threatened to hang up her pen, as she thinks she is getting too old, but I will believe that when I see it. She is not a giver-upper!

Rumours are going around the office that there is a new story in the pipeline that I’m not starring in. This surprises me, for having ensured I got my job back in Ghost of a Chance, I thought she would be dying to work with me again.

That might be the wrong word, as her recent health problems have worried me about my future, and I have questions. The trouble is, I have no one to ask. I mean, if an author dies, what happens to their characters?

Are we supposed to die too, or are we relegated to the twilight world of fiction, only managing to live again if someone reads one of our books?

The thought of not working with Jaye again makes me sad, so I hope her health improves, and we can have more fun together…

When I saw this post this morning, you could have knocked me down with a feather!

You have probably guessed that I haven’t mentioned my new story idea yet, and now that he has forced my hand, I will. Should I tell him that it might be our last together? I mean, neither of us is getting any younger. It’s a great pity you can’t do that unless you write science fiction.

He is looking good, don’t you think? (be still my beating heart!)

He certainly is looking good. A very handsome man, if I might say so.

I read a novel, many centuries ago, that postulated that fictional characters actually became real in some universe or other. Maybe we are all people from fiction someone has written. Perhaps the personage we call God is actually the author of these books. 🤔😲🙃

Anyway, David Snow seems real enough to hijack your blog!

Wouldn’t it be nice, though, to think that the characters we’ve come to know so well might continue somewhere beyond when someone reads about them. They are so real to us, who invented them. So real that they often seem to be dictating the path of the story. (I still find that weird, after a dozen books.)
