Is the Writing on the Wall? #Memory

Most of the time, my memory works fine, I am glad to say.

But when it refuses to work, which is becoming increasingly frequent these days, it can reduce me to a zombie. As you can imagine, this is not welcome for someone who practically invented multitasking.

I am beginning to cherish every minute of my normal brain activity and pray I can keep hold of it as long as possible.

At the moment, I am waiting for my latest story to return from the final edit, so to pass the time (and save my fingernails) I have begun the re-editing of The Scarlet Ribbon, my sister’s book.

This was written over twenty years ago, and we have decided to re-release it later this year after an intensive edit. This decision was made in anticipation of the soon-to-be-finished sequel.

During this process, MS Word threw me another curve ball.

I was checking some relevant points when I noticed that some of the speech marks had changed to old-fashioned marks. I prefer the curly or smart ones. Seeing these really made me see red, as they did this a few weeks ago. Scrivener…Part One https://wordpress.com/post/jenanita01.com/104189 and Scrivener…Part Two https://wordpress.com/post/jenanita01.com/104216

While I was trying to change the speech marks, the final chapter went for a walk. I would love to know where it went, for I would probably find a lot of my work there!

This was the Final Straw

This really was the last straw, so I transferred the master copy to Google Drive.

It is very similar to MS Word, but apparently, it can handle large files better than Word and doesn’t throw spanners all over the place. Time will only tell if this is true, and I hope it is, for I am seriously fed up with the games Word plays.

So far, my ageing brain is coping very well with all these shenanigans, but one more spanner might send it reeling off into space!

I am learning (the hard way) to write down every important thought when I think of it, in detail and in full. All those cryptic notes have long ceased to be useful. I suppose I will be forced to use more Post-it notes soon.

Are any of our followers having memory issues, and how do you cope?

Not quite what I meant!

Hi Jaye. So sorry about the memory loss. I too get it, and im grateful for your advice on using the post it notes but in more detail because the cryptic ones often elude me later. And I’m not yet even in my mid-life. 😣
You will see me more towards the end of year , and in 2025. I’m still sorting out a very new and busy life.🌼 Hugs💜💚✨

I suspect your problem may be the amount of work you have been doing, Jude. Once you sort out your life, things should get better…

Notes…yes. -sigh- My handwriting is getting to be almost illegible as I spend most of my time typing, yet I now have bits of paper all over the place with illegible, handwritten notes scribbled in every available spot. Every few weeks I have to go through and try to decipher what I need to keep and what needs to be thrown away. And shopping lists…-facepalm-…shopping lists are now a critical necessity. :(

I was always doing this, Meeks. Indecipherable notes are worse than no notes at all. With a lot of patience, I have learned to write helpful notes, and it makes life so much better…

Word does seem to throw shenanigans into the works, Jaye. I still use it (to anxious to make a change), but I keep lots and lots of back up files to be on the safe side.

Yes, I thought that would help, Diana, but it just made for more confusion… This is one of the reasons I hate computers, and why Anita won’t touch them!

Oh dear. It just goes to show that computers will never match the intricacy and power of our brains. I do a “save as” back up of my WIP every time I have a productive day. It’s saved me a lot of grief.

That’s a great idea, Diana… although, the way my memory is going, computers will be winning that battle soon enough!

I often wonder if I will ever not need to do this, Jennie. With the state of my memory, probably not!

Still no memory issues but I’m sure they will arrive in due time. Keeping a note book handy is a good way to remember things. It should be bound so you don’t have a bunch of individual thoughts floating around. Post-it notes are the worst.

I wonder frequently how we managed without giving clues to Google to come up with that floating name that just evaded us!

Writing something down is an excellent idea, but I don’t seem to have the equipment on me when I need it.
The other week I spent two whole days trying to remember the name of a town near to the one where I live! Why couldn’t I remember? I know it as well as my own name. (Well, almost.)

I think it happens to all of us as we become older. I write things down more these days instead of trusting myself to remember them.

I find that I have to write down my thoughts…and even those thoughts that I believe I could never forget (because I do) I write down. It’s fascinating how our brains work….or not whatever the case might be:)

I used to have a pile of scribbled notes, Janet. Mostly indecipherable, so I have had to get better organised, and legible!

I often think of something I need to check on the internet when I’m not able to do it right away. Later, I remember only that I wanted to check something, but not what it was, because it’s gone for good. If I can hold the thought long enough to write it down, I’m lucky.

I still find myself convinced that I will remember something, only to be sorry I didn’t write it down. At the start of this new week, I have a page in my notebook crammed with things to check. Things I would normally forget.
