Neighbours…

We have never had much luck with neighbours.

Over the years and several moves, we have encountered many varieties of neighbours. We have seen everything from outright war about boundary lines to complaints about overhanging trees, parking places and noisy children.

The perfect neighbours, I think, are the quiet ones. The ones who might say good morning or mention the weather and keep themselves to themselves.

Of course, good neighbours are worth their weight in gold, but unfortunately, we haven’t found many of those. Once, we did move next door to people we knew, but they moved out shortly afterwards. And no, it wasn’t because of us; they had been planning it for a while. At least that was their story!

We have had a problem with our current neighbours for the last year. On the one side, we have constantly screaming kids, accompanied by equally noisy parents who screamed back. I suppose that is one way of handling it! The father fancies himself as a drummer, so when he’s not yelling his head off, he’s drumming on every surface!

On the other side, the people were quiet, but their large dog would cry like a child every time they left him, and this happened a lot. This was the saddest sound I have ever heard in my life, and after weeks of this, I was so depressed. We were on the verge of complaining, for the dog’s sake, mind you, when they moved out.

The new neighbours, however, couldn’t be more different. A father and young daughter, not sure if there is a wife, are quiet. We welcomed them to the neighbourhood, and the father was polite, if a little mysterious.

We are always curious about people until we get to know them, so when the father left the house wearing a rucksack, we were a little wary when we saw a hammer sticking out of the top.

Of course, alarm bells rang in my head. Well, I write mystery thrillers!

Could we be living next door to a serial killer?

I live in a four-story apartment building and even though I’ve been here going on seven years, I only know a couple of my neighbors. Most everyone sticks to themselves. Interesting observation about your new neighbor. Perhaps he’s simply a carpenter. :)

We are so lucky to have wonderful neighbours here in Spain. Everyone is so friendly, we often have pool parties, go out for meals together and sit on each others terrace drinking tea/coffee or something stronger at times. I love my neighbours and they are from all over the world too. Come to think of it we had great neighbours in Canada too. Just lucky I guess.

Perhaps he’s a builder, lol. We’ve lived next door to the same couple for 33 years, but now the old boy has died and his wife has just moved to a care home. New neighbours, an elderly lady and her 40 year old daughter, will be moving in together with their dog. At least there won’t be any screaming children!

There’s the basis for a story. Where is the wife? Very quiet and doesn’t go out… agoraphobia? Divorced and living elsewhere? Under the patio? So many ideas to play with.
We seem to have always been lucky with neighbours, except for a short while in our current house.

When we moved here, there was a couple with 2 children and 2 dogs. They were a bit odd, but they kept the dogs in the garage, which they carpeted! The dogs weren’t allowed in the house. Both adults were out at work all day, so they left the back garage door open for the dogs.

They didn’t seem to take the dogs out for walks, either, so there were 2 bored animals, all day alone with nothing to do but bark. And bark they did, in the gap between the houses. The noise came through the vent for our gas fire, right into our living room.

Otherwise, we’ve always got on fine with our neighbours.
