It’s a cold day, bitterly cold with snow on the ground and trees. It sparkles in the sun, making the landscape a breathtaking song of winter for the day. By the end of the day it was slushy and full of footprints and dirty, but that was because it was lived in. Snowmen were built. People and animals walked through it. Snow ice cream was made. Thoughts and plans of the new year were made. It was a fresh way to introduce new year.

I got the call, or rather, calls, one month ago. Three times I picked up the phone to receive the news that my grandmother had died that morning. I got three calls because weeks before I hadn’t gotten a call about her brother’s death. I found out in a checkout aisle as I stocked candy two weeks after the fact, which I found quite funny given…
