“We can take the car out in the morning,”
Said my son, “I’ll get up and we’ll go.”
Nothing loath, I agreed, we could test it
“I am sure there’s somewhere that you know…”
I’d be glad of a run in the motor,
I’m learning to trust it, you see,
And my son, in a generous moment,
Had left destinations to me.
I could, if we set off quite early,
Head out, perhaps, do some research…
And while putting the car through its paces
Sneak in the odd hillfort or church.
The curtains are closed when I get there,
He’s still in the land of the dead,
So I bang about making his coffee
And soon get him moving instead.
I had a good day with the camera,
We called at a good place or three,
And the car, earning trust by the minute,
Is proving its value to me.
