The photo for this week’s prompt was taken in the chapel in the side chapel of the church at Bakewell. that houses a number of elaborate memorials… and which had helped set us on a curious journey of discovery. The picture shows the effigy of a knight and a message left in his memory, over six hundred years after his death.
The knight is Sir Thomas Wendesley, who was slain at the Battle of Shrewsbury, in 1403, during the uprising led by Owain Glyndŵr. The Battle was a decisive victory for the king, even though his men were decimated by the enemy archers and as the arrows “fell like leaves in Autumn, every one struck a mortal man“.
